Positions on the GASS Committee

The current GASS Committee consists of 18 members, 17 of whom were elected at the AGM in October last year. Committee members have various responsibilities which are outlined below. Committee members are required to attend meetings, which are held approximately once a month, usually at the house of an obliging committee member. Meetings are a chance for each committee member to report their progress in their portfolio.

GASSies who are interested in becoming a member of the committee are strongly encouraged to speak to current members. Some positions require more work than others, although some positions require a large amount of work over a short time, eg Winter Camp and Canberra Camp.
President:

The President is responsible for the overall running of GASS. This requires frequent communication with SAGSE, liaising with the most recent class of Stipis whether they be Australian or German, and involvement in most GASS events and activities. The President organises and chairs meetings and assists other committee members with their portfolios.

Vice-President:

The Vice-President is voted in last at the AGM, andis always one of the newly elected committee members. When the President is unable to attend committee meetings or fill the role of President in any other way, the Vice-President steps in and fills this position.

Treasurer:

The Treasurer's main duty is to manage the fiscal aspects of GASS. This involves running the cheque book as well as collecting money from members when required. The treasurer keeps a record of all deposits and withdrawals to reconcile with monthly bank statements. The treasurer is to use his/her discretion in refunding money for stationary/phone calls etc to committee members.

Secretary:

The role of Secretary involves attending the committee meetings and taking the minutes. After the meeting the secretary has the task of typing up the minutes and distributing them to the committee members before the next meeting. Some communication with the Consumer Affairs Victoria is also necessary.

Host-Family Coordinator (2 positions):

Host family coordinators are charged with finding families who will host and match well with the German exchange students. This includes preparing information packages to send to schools and working with other committee members in liaising with each school. Interviews and are arranged for host families overseen by the Host Family Coordinators who also play a role in the matching process. Once the Germans arrive in Australia, the host-family coordinators ensure that everything is running smoothly by talking to both the students and their respective families.

Fundraising Coordinators (2 positions):

Fundraising Coordinators organise events throughout the year with a high concentration during the 10-week period whilst the German exchange students are here, to raise funds for GASS with the aim to sponsor a student yearly. Events include Trivia Night, Movie Night, Chocolate drives, Tshirt sales and a Christmas party.

Winter Camp Coordinator:

Winter Camp Coordinators are responsible for organising a five-day camp to be held during the winter holidays for the German-exchange students, their host-siblings and GASSies. They works in conjunction with the coordinators in NSW, and arrange the transport, accommodation and itinerary for the camp. Food and activities for the week must also be budgeted, and records from previous years can be used as guidelines for catering.

Marketing Officer:

Marketing Officers are responsible for the promotion and profile-raising of GASS. This includes liasing with schools to inform them about the exchange program, as w

Canberra Camp Coordinator:

The Canberra Camp Coordinator is responsible for organizing the Canberra Camp for the German-exchange students. The camp is split between Canberra and Sydney with about two and a half days in each city. Camp coordinators need to be flexible enough to cope with many last-minute changes, and willing to spend time researching various alternatives for accomodation, transport and activities. They also need to deal with the people attending the camp, and be active on the camp itself.

Naja Editor:

The Naja editor is responsible for compiling, editing and distributing the GASS Victoria magazine, Naja, approximately four times a year. Members of GASS are welcome to provide submissions to the Naja editor for publications. Naja informs GASSies about upcoming events and contains all of the latest GASS gossip.

Website Coordinator:

The website coordinator is responsible for managing and updating the GASS Victoria website throughout the year. They also assist in promotion and advertising of events.

First Year Representative:

On their return, each group of GASSies elects one of their own torepresent them on the committee. This person's job is to assist withGASS events and help to integrate the First Years into the Society.
